Staff report

Thanks to a seven-run eruption in the second inning, the South Effingham Mustangs rolled to an 11-5 win over Screven County on Wednesday in a non-region baseball game.

The Mustangs, now 4-4 and winners of three of their last four games, grabbed a 9-0 lead in the second with their outburst. The Gamecocks whittled the lead to 9-5, but South Effingham added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

Austin Peigh drove in three runs, and Corey Horne had two RBIs. The Mustangs rapped out 11 hits against the Gamecocks.

Brandon James, who scored three times, Dylan Griffin, Chase Clayton, Dalton Griffin and Josh Huggins also drove in a run each.

Ryan McClendon got the win on the mound for the Mustangs.

South Effingham hosts Wayne County today at 6 p.m. in the Region 3-AAAA opener. The Mustangs will travel to Richmond Hill on Monday and then to Liberty County on Tuesday.
