South Effingham boys, girls teams win at Wayne County meet

Pricilla Cartwright won a cross country meet Thursday at Wayne County High School, finishing with a time of 19:03.20. Cartwright, a South Effingham senior, finished more than two minutes ahead of her nearest competitor, Bradwell Institute’s Kayleigh Deal. The Lady Mustangs also won the team title, beating Glynn Academy by 18 points, and the South Effingham boys made it a sweep edging Glynn’s boys by 18 points for first place. Rachel Larson of South Effingham was third at 21:30, and Derlysa Williams of SEHS was 12th at 23:11. Jamie Yarbrough was 19th at 23:29, and Madison Messer took 27th at 23:59. Effingham County was sixth in the girls race. Taylor Walsh paced the Lady Rebels with a 10th-place finish, posting a time of 23:09. Ashley Kaeser was 21st at 23:32, Faith Deal was 42nd at 24:36, Shakari Powell was 73rd at 27:03 and Abbey King placed 91st at 28:09. Bryce Griggs was second in the boys race at 17:14, while freshman Hans Ames placed third at 17:45. Michael McRee took fourth at 17:56, Thomas Granat placed 20th at 18:54, and Benjamin Mogandu was 28th at 19:16. Effingham County was fifth in the 16-team field, as Justin Dolata placed seventh at 18:13. Freshman Rafael Osella took 17th at 18:49, and teammate Noah McIntosh was one second and one place behind. Timothy Smith was 58th at 19:55, and Ian Foster was 71st at 20:16. Wayne County’s Gorge Tlacuatl won the boys race in 17:03. South Effingham also raced in the Carrollton Last Chance meet Saturday on the course where the state meet will be held. Griggs was fifth at 18:22, Ames was eighth at 18:39, Granat posted a time of 19:41 to take 22nd, Gavin Benbow was 42nd at 20:56 and Graham Lewis was 43rd at 21:01. Wilson Moore of Apalachee had the best time at 17:27. Larson led the SEHS girls with a time of 23:44, placing her 11th. Yarbrough was 17th at 24:29, Roop was 24th at 25:37, Messer placed 26th at 26:05 and Quinna Eldridge was 28th at 26:18. Jones County’s Erin Leonard had the best girls time at 20:22. The Region 3-AAAAA meet will be held Thursday at Richmond Hill High School.
