South Effingham’s Pricilla Cartwright capped her cross country senior season with the stroke of a pen Monday afternoon. Cartwright signed a letter of intent with Augusta University to run there next year. “I’m really, really excited about it, she said. “This whole year, I’ve been thinking about where I’m going to go. I’ve been concentrating on getting into college and I want to run in college. To be here today and actually signing, I’m really excited about the future. Cartwright won the Region 3-AAAAA championship three weeks ago at Richmond Hill High School and finished 10th in the Class AAAAA state meet at Carrollton the following week. Colleges were calling South Effingham cross country coach Laura Soles on the morning of Cartwright’s signing ceremony. “I am so happy for Pricilla, Soles said. “She’s got so many people talking to her. She shopped around. She decided Augusta. She is excited to be going. If Pricilla’s happy, I’m happy. Cartwright will be attending Augusta with her sister Rayne, and she wants to study ecology and pre-law there. “The coach and the team were really welcoming, she said. “The coach seems like he can take me to the next level and the school has all the majors that I need, so that’s really exciting. Cross country scholarships are difficult to obtain, and Cartwright had that in mind throughout the fall. “It’s a very big deal, she said of her signing. “This whole cross country season, I’ve been focusing on getting the attention of college coaches because it’s really hard. It’s a really big deal to not have to think about it anymore. I can think about things like doing well in track. Said Soles: “It’s very hard and very competitive, and she works hard. Her sister was training her too. I know she’ll put the work in.
