ARC battles past Rebels, ends ECHS’ season

The Richmond Academy Musketeers went 23-of-31 from the free throw line and held on to beat Effingham County 85-74 in the first round of the Class AAAAA boys basketball state tournament last Wednesday. The Rebels, who ended their season at 22-5, outscored the Musketeers 22-16 in the second quarter to take a 35-34 lead at intermission. But ARC claimed a 55-49 lead going to the fourth period. Deshaun Wlkenson led the Rebels with 21 points, despite not connecting on any 3-point shots. Jaden Rodriguez had 16 points, hitting four 3s, and Rashad Griffin scored 15. Cody Hilbert added nine points, Kha’leed Stapleton had seven and PJ Brown scored six points. Senior Madison Williams led all scorers with 32 points. He sank four 3-point shots and was 11-of-18 from the field. He also was 6-of-8 from the line. Rashad Calloway and Moses Williams each had 14 points for the Musketeers. Moses Williams also pulled down 10 rebounds. The game was the final high school contest for Wilkenson, Brown, Griffin, Liam Lanaghan and Amaure Bing. Wilkenson ended the season as the Rebels’ leading scorer, averaging 17.1 points per game. Four Rebels finished the year with scoring averages topping 10 points per game — Wilkenson, Rodriguez (13.5), Brown (11.2) and Griffin (11). Rodriguez shot 44 percent from 3-point range, and Wilkenson was 39 percent from 3-point range, along with hitting 53 percent of his other field goal attempts. Six Rebels — Wilkenson, Lanaghan, Griffin, Rodriguez, Hilbert and Demonte Lee — played in all 27 games.
