Five athletes qualify for state track finals

Effingham County High School’s Micheal McDonald took first in the pole vault at the Class AAAAA boys state track sectional, and three South Effingham athletes advanced to the state track meets as well.

McDonald turned in a best of 13 feet, six inches clear of Gainesville’s Nick Anderson.

The sectionals were held Saturday at Heritage High School in Conyers.

South Effingham’s Pricilla Cartwright qualified for the state finals in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs. Cartwright was third in the 800 at sectionals with a time of 2:20.08 and she was sixth in the 1,600 at 5:22.45.

SEHS’ Darius Scott qualified for the state meet in the triple jump, finishing sixth in sectionals with a best effort of 45-10. Teammate Jacob Archer qualified after finishing eighth in the discus with a best of 129 feet.

Olivia Brown of Effingham County also qualified for the state meet after taking eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.91 seconds.

The girls state championships will be held Thursday-Saturday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. The boys championships are set for May 12-14 at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson.
