“The South Effingham Mustangs didn’t have turn very far to find their next baseball coach.
“Veteran assistant John DeRing has been named to take over the program, after longtime coach Ron Womack stepped down to concentrate on his role as a school administrator.
““We considered several applicants for this position, said SEHS Principal Dr. Mark Winters, “but the qualities we wanted in a coach kept us coming back to Coach DeRing. His knowledge of baseball and his work ethic are characteristic of South Effingham.
“DeRing has been coaching for 10 years and has spent the last five years at South Effingham. The Mustangs reached the Class AAAAA state semifinals, finishing with a record of 23-13.
““Coach DeRing will continue the Mustang legend on the baseball diamond as he helps student-athletes excel both on and off the field, Winters said.
“Womack, who is an assistant principal at the school, led the Mustangs to 135 wins in seven seasons.
“Coach DeRing is hard-working and extremely knowledgeable about baseball, Womack said of his former lieutenant. “There is no doubt in my mind that he will carry on the tradition at SEHS.
