Mustangs rally past Pirates

Four different Mustangs scored, and the South Effingham boys soccer team rallied with an early second-half flurry to beat Brunswick 4-2 Tuesday.

John Browning, Jimmy Fletcher, Andrew Kennedy and Brandon Vinke scored for the Mustangs, who improved to 2-4 on the year and 2-2 in Region 2-AAAA. Fletcher also had an assist, as did Marshal Butler and Wesley Mullins.

Fielder Heard notched nine saves, including one on a Pirates penalty kick. Corey Orr had two goals for the Pirates (3-3, 1-3).

Brunswick outshot South Effingham 4-2 in an overtime shootout and posted a 2-1 victory in a Region 2-AAAA girls soccer game Tuesday night.

Freshman Amanda Chase scored in regulation for the Lady Mustangs, who outshot the Lady Pirates 28-14. The Lady Pirates’ Callie Steele scored with 30 seconds left in regulation after a hand ball call in the box.

Sophomore Hannah Kessler and junior Ashlyn Sullivan converted their shootout kicks for the Lady Mustangs.

South Effingham will host Statesboro tonight.

South Effingham’s doubleheader with Ware in Waycross, postponed last Friday, will be played April 16 with the girls game at 5 p.m. and the boys game at 7 p.m. Ware will visit South Effingham on April 10, with the boys playing at 11 a.m. and the girls game to start at 1 p.m.
